Brooming the Mountain
KU Leuven
Kaj made a broom from his walking stick, using grass gathered along the path to the bivouac. He wanted to give something back to the mountain. At home, we use brooms to care for our interiors, so why not do the same for the mountain? This gesture scales up an action we usually associate exclusively with interiority. He sought to create a place where he could listen to the mountain. He wanted to be still, so that he could hear the mountain speak. This performance was documented during the workshop week “Measuring the Mountains”, held from 8–14 October 2022 in Val d’Aosta, Italy. An exhibition of the artifacts and short film 'Brooming the Mountain' took place as part of the Zeeuwse Lichting 2023 at the Centre for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture in Zeeland. Running from Thursday, January 11 to Friday, February 18, 2024. Broom artifact Wooden stick, grass, jute rope Val d’Aosta (2022) Brooming the Mountain (film) 05:57 min Val d’Aosta (2022)
